my son the piglet

So, my son is 6 months old-he’s been doing the whole solids thing for almost two months. The first month was minimal solids, once or twice a week. We moved up to once daily, and increased rapidly from there. He’s had rice cereal, peas, butternut squash, acorn squash, apples, pears, avocados, and tofu…I think that’s everything. Well, I am just in shock at how much he eats every time I feed him. For a normal day, E has 6 bottles, each containing somewhere between 4 and 6 oz. In between these bottles, he has 3 meals of solids every day as well. Each solids meal contains at least 3 oz of fruit/veggie and 3 Tbsp of rice cereal. He weighed in at a whopping 17 lbs 6 oz this past week. He eats so much, where does it all go. No wait, we all know where it ends up, but if it’s not packing the pounds on, then where. My thoughts are that he somehow works it all off. E is in constant motion, whenever he is awake, he’s moving. Maybe that’s where all those extra calories go. But my goodness! How this boy eats. When A or I am feeding him some ‘real’ food, he is so intent upon the process, not taking his eyes off the spoon until it’s heading for his mouth, his hands literally SHAKING with excitement over what is happening. We can say now with certainty the way to HIS heart is through food…no questions there.

I watch the other mothers I know feed their babies…some are interested in solids, some aren’t. There are varying degrees to which other babies eat. I think I just have a bottomless pit for a son, not that I mind. It’s a ton of fun to make his baby food and decide what he’ll eat next.

Today E tried tofu for the first time. I don’t think I mashed it up well enough because he made the funniest face (I had mixed it in with butternut squash) and didn’t seem into it at all, so uncharacteristic of him. I’m trying again tomorrow, pureeing it more for him, but he may have his dad’s hatred of all weird textured foods.
